Week 10: Do Some Social Media Networking
When Jayne Benson wanted to get the word out about her new venture, she turned to the Web and social networking sites. Her venture began when other moms at her children’s school saw the cupcake creations she brought in for snack time, and Jayne realized she could create a business teaching others the art of the cupcake. She organized classes and cupcake-making parties to cover everything from batter to icing to making cupcake characters.
When it was time to spread the word about her cupcake-making parties, Jayne figured the easiest way to reach her target audience—local moms—would be through Facebook. She could post photos of her latest creations and let her friends know that she was offering her services: not only for planning and running kids’ birthday parties or afterschool activities, but also for ladies’ nights. Using Facebook was the fastest way to get the word out and tell everyone she knew that she could bring the cupcake-making fun to them.
The whole world is using social media and so should you. It’s easy once you get started; don’t let the process intimidate you. Most moms with their own ventures weren’t sure how to update their status on Facebook, tweet on Twitter, or pin to Pinterest when they got started, but after trying social media, they quickly got the hang of it, and you will too.
For many, social media remains a mystery, so I’m going to give you a few simple ideas to begin your social media education and campaign. You can take it so much further than what you’ll find here when you’re ready to do more. Get started with at least a few things and learn as you go. If you knew all that you could do, it would be overwhelming. Right now it’s enough to get started.
